About Glenwood Springs

The Ute Indians came to this valley in pursuit of “Big Medicine” found in the vapors and sulfur of the springs and caves in Glenwood Springs. The area’s natural resources and beauty was reason for government geologist, Captain Richard Sopris, to find permanent settlement here. Originally called Defiance, in 1885 the fledgling town was renamed Glenwood Springs.

As the gateway to the Roaring Fork Valley, Glenwood Springs has attracted many noteworthy visitors…from Doc Holliday, to Molly Brown, to President Teddy Roosevelt, to William “Buffalo Bill” Cody to name a few. The allure of Glenwood isn’t just in its healing waters or its history. Today, Glenwood offers a wealth of activities to satisfy visitors and residents alike.

Glenwood is a sparkling valley town that boasts a family friendly atmosphere with plenty to see and do. Spend your days in Glenwood relaxing at the spa of the World Famous Hot Springs Lodge and Pool, exploring the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, rafting on the Colorado River, or biking along the Glenwood Canyon. Location

Glenwood Springs is located 150 miles west of Denver, 85 miles east of Grand Junction and 40 miles north of Aspen.

At an altitude of 5,768 feet, Glenwood Springs enjoys mild winters and comfortable summers with plenty of sunshine.

Education

Glenwood Springs is in the Roaring Fork School District. There are several day care centers and pre-schools. Colorado Mountain College is located in Glenwood, offering a two-year program for students with a beautiful campus in the Rockies. Ranked No. 1 in Colorado and No. 17 in the Nation according to CNNMoney.

Valley View Medical Center in located in Glenwood Springs, rated as one of the best medical facilities in the nation. Other medical establishments are available nearby. Aspen Valley Hospital is located 43 miles to the south.

Recreation

Glenwood offers many recreational activities in the area. They include hiking, biking, golfing, kayaking, rafting, and fly-fishing. In the winter, cross-country skiing or snow-shoeing on any one of the many hiking trails. Downhill skiing is available in Glenwood Springs at Sunlight Mountain Resort, or venture to Aspen and Snowmass only 45 minutes away.
